Feast Through Fast
Fasting is a way to practice the art of feasting on the presence of God. God has created us as well-rounded individuals. We are mind, body, and soul; however, our spiritual walk often takes place in only our mind and soul. Fasting is a way to bring our bodies into our faith-walk and be reminded that, while we need food to survive here on earth, it is not our most basic need. Fasting reminds us that we do not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the Father. Look with me at the basics of Feasting through Fasting and challenge yourself to plan a time when you can take a step of faith and invest in your walk with God through fasting.
Why fast?
We fast in order to feed on the bread of life.
To cut away the things that can distract from the gospel.
To draw near to God.
Fasting is the complete self looking to God. It takes body, mind, and soul to complete a fast.

In his answers to Satan’s temptations Jesus gives us insight into why He fasted for 40 days.
That he doesn’t live by food alone (HE NEEDS GOD)
That God alone is worthy of worship (WORSHIP GOD ALONE)
That God is not to be tested (TRUST GOD AT HIS WORD)
How to fast?
“Anoint your head + Wash your face” - This instruction means that when we fast, we go about our normal, everyday habits of showering, getting dressed, interacting with others, etc. Jesus is concerned that we do not in any way draw attention to ourselves while we are seeking to be filled by him through fasting.
Fast in secret. A secret fast ensures that we are fasting for the enjoyment of God not the praise of man.
God is concerned only about our heart. Fasting is coming to Him with relationship in mind.
Three Biblical fasts: 1. Abstain from food + water (Acts 9:9) 2. Abstain from only food (Luke 4:2) 3. Abstain from certain foods (Daniel 10:3)
What is the reward for fasting?
Intimacy
Direction
Breakthrough
Ultimately, though, it is about the “eternal approval of God.” This is our reward when we fast - that we gain a glimpse of a part of God we have never seen before.
When to fast?
Jesus assumes his followers will fast with his words, “When you fast,”
When seeking direction from the Father.
When ordaining people for ministry.
When you notice idols creeping into your routine.
When your faith is weak.
When you aren’t hearing God in prayer.
